The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that 80% of South Africans use traditional medicines (compared to a figure of 60% worldwide) and that there are over 200,000 traditional healers practising in SA. Diabetes, epilepsy, high blood pressure and TB are a major concern - though HIV/AIDS has the highest profile of any disease in the region at present.
