TWENTY-SEVENTH ISSUE FOR ’12-’13 Letter from the Nurse's Office Dear Parents, Now that spring is officially here, (though it doesn’t feel like it yet…), the health office would like to take this opportunity to remind you of some very important issues. This article is loaded with a lot of critical information so please read it carefully! Allergy and asthma season is around the corner. This may be a good time to bring your student in for an allergy and asthma check. Be prepared for the pollen and plan. Remember, if you want medication of any kind to be given in school, a doctor’s order is needed and your signature in BOTH boxes on the consent form found on Lake Harriet’s website under “About our School” in the Health Services tab. To all parents of 7th and 8th graders, please know that once your student has reached this age, he/she can self-carry over the counter medications like Tylenol, Motrin, and cold medication with your signed consent. The self-medication consent form can be found on Lake Harriet’s website under “About our School” in the Health Services tab. Students must NEVER share their medications with other students however. If you plan on having your 6th grade student attend Lake Harriet in the fall, he/she will need updated immunizations on file for 7th grade. Letters went home recently regarding this. Also, if your student plans on playing sports, a sports qualifying physical exam form is needed on file. This form is good for 3 years once filed and can be found on Lake Harriet’s Health Services website. Medications: If your child requires any sort of medication in school such as Epi-pens, Benadryl, or asthma inhaler, the health office renews these in the spring before Memorial Day. Medication authorization forms and Emergency Health Plans (EHP) will be coming to your e-mail inbox soon. Please print, sign and return the medication authorization form as soon as possible. It can be faxed to the doctor’s office from here OR you can obtain the physician renewal signature and bring in the signed form to the health office. These are due before Memorial Day. EHP’s: Please review your student’s EHP carefully making sure that your plan is current with correct phone numbers and contact information. If there are no changes to the EHP, indicate such in your e-mail response to me and it will be good for next year. All forms must be renewed
prior to Memorial Day. Medications are kept over the summer unless they are due to expire in which case they will be sent home during the last week of school. If you need your child’s asthma inhaler or Epi-pen over the summer, please communicate this in your e-mail response with your forms. (It is our preference NOT to send these meds home in June unless necessary.) Contact information: We need current, updated contact information for your student in our software program. Contact information includes parent e-mail addresses and home, work and cell phone numbers of parents and emergency contacts. The school secretaries update this in our computer program. The health office needs current e-mail information so that we can continue with our successful e-mail classroom communicable disease notifications. This saves money on paper and printer use. If you change your e-mail, be sure to contact the school secretary and the health office. Regarding flip flops- We STRONGLY discourage wearing them in school. Injuries occur daily with flip flop use. Many students are not aware of other people’s toes. Schools, classroom furniture and playgrounds are contraindicated with flip flops. Many toenails have been painfully sacrificed for this cause. Engineers with mops and buckets are on standby status for the flip flop wearers. One last reminder- regarding fever, diarrhea or vomiting, MPLS has a strict 24 hour rule regarding this. Your child must be fever, diarrhea and vomit free for 24 hours (without the help of medication) before returning to school. This is a public health requirement. Minneapolis Kids registraton opened March 15. Online registration is available at http://mplskids.mpls.k12.mn.us. The Summer Program will be located at Upper Campus for kids entering grades 1-7. 2013-14 School Year Registration opens April 15 at noon for current families. Registration for new families opens May 1 at noon. 2013 Science Fair - WOW!
Congratulations to the 270 students who participated in the Science Fair on March 14! It was an exciting night of exploring, discovering and sharing in spectacular ways! Thank you to the many parent volunteers, prize contributors, and LHCS staff who supported the effort. Because of you, the students had this opportunity to shine with science! Special thanks to the PTA for sponsoring the event. To see photos, watch for the "Great Job" banner that will be displayed at LC in early April and UC in late April. Proceeds will be donated to a local charity chosen by the 2nd grade. Why buy new when second- hand is more friendly?! K-2 students will visit the sale with their classroom Tuesday and Wednesday and should come to school prepared with spending money for both days. Most items will be priced between 25 cents and five dollars. Adults limited to one item on the first day to ensure quality items available to all students. LHCS students performed well at MPS district History Day that took place on Sat. March 23 at Anwatin Middle School. Nine 7th graders are advancing to State History Day in May for their projects. Congratulations to these students, and to ALL of the participants from LHCS who qualified for the district competition, and to Social Studies teachers, Ms. Krawetz and Mr. Wood. The website and historical paper state finalists will be announced on Fri. 3-29 so stay tuned. We are so proud of you -- go dragons!
