Saw Palmetto
- Prostate Formula for Men

If you are a male over 40… you owe it to yourself to take Saw Palmetto. Scientific studies show that 50% of all men over 40
will develop prostate problems. In fact, the New York Times recently reported that 1 out of 4 American men have trouble with
sexual performance, because, as the prostate enlarges, sexual performance declines and often becomes painful. As a result,
many men become impotent, and some even experience the devastating embarrassment of incontinence. Fortunately,
researchers and medical professionals from around the world are reporting encouraging data on Saw Palmetto’s
effectiveness in supporting Prostate health.
What is the function of the prostate gland? The prostate is the size and shape of a walnut and is located under the
bladder and directly in front of the rectum. It secretes a thick, whitish fluid that provides about half the fluid in semen, and
helps transport sperm. After about age 40, the prostate begins to grow in just about every male because DHT
(dihydrotestosterone), a potent form of the male hormone testosterone, isn’t excreted efficiently. DHT then accumulates in
the prostate, causing prostate cells to rapidly reproduce. Sometimes the enlargement is a sign of cancer. But usually the
result is a condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH.
As BPH develops, prostate overgrowth in the prostate may press against the neck of the bladder or urethra, squeezing the pipe shut, like stepping on a garden hose. This pressure can make it difficult to urinate and may result in a variety of symptoms including: urgency (the need to go immediately), hesitancy (trouble getting started), nocturia (having to get up at night to urinate), and increased frequency of urination. How Can Saw Palmetto Help? Saw Palmetto is a small palm tree native to the Atlantic Coast of North America. The plant
has olive-sized berries which are used for medicinal purposes. American Indians consumed Saw Palmetto as a normal part
of their diet. In the 19th and 20th centuries, it was used as a tonic for genito-urinary tract disease, to increase testicular
function in men, to treat mammary gland disorders in women, and as a diuretic. Saw Palmetto is currently used extensively in
Europe in the treatment of BPH.
Saw Palmetto extract has been shown to help urinary discomfort and improve urinary flow and frequency. It is effective in helping to shrink over-grown prostate tissues, an action similar to the drug Proscar- but without the side effects. Saw Palmetto helps reduce the level DHT by blocking its receptor sites in the prostate and by inhibiting enzymes necessary for DHT conversion. In fact, in a 1993 study comparing Saw Palmetto and Proscar, Saw Palmetto had a greater inhibition level of enzymes that convert testosterone to DHT. (Rhodes 1993) Just recently, at the 1998 International Saw Palmetto Symposium, Dietmar Bach, M.D. of the Department of Urology at St. Agnes Hospital, Bocholt, Germany, reported on a study in which 315 men were treated with Saw Palmetto over a three-year period. It was found that the percentage of subjects reporting "better or symptom-free" were: nocturia, 73%; daytime frequency, 53%; complete voiding of the bladder, 74%; and reduction in prostate size, 28%. Current studies indicate that about 10 million men in the United States alone are affected by BPH. Dr. Bach predicts that the number of men with BPH will double by the year 2030. You don’t have to be one of them. Even if you’re not experiencing symptoms, it’s never too early to support and tone your glandular tissues and help regulate hormonal imbalances. Saw Palmetto has also been found to strengthen the reproductive system, and the thyroid, which controls overall glandular function. Since it helps expel toxins from the system by stimulating urine flow, Saw Palmetto may also help reduce the risk of urinary tract infections.
