In order for a waste to be considered hazardous, it must exhibit some characteristic or characteristics of hazardous waste. If a material is classifiable as ignitable, corrosive, reactive, toxic or characteristic, it is considered to be hazardous (40 CFR 261 Part B).
B. PURPOSE
The purpose of this procedure is to aid in the classification of waste materials in order to determine whether it is hazardous.
C. REQUIRED MATERIAL(S)
D. PROCEDURE
There are many different types of hazardous waste generated at ISU. A list of the wastes that fall into each category can be found in 40 CFR 261. The type of waste generated most commonly at ISU is characteristic waste, but several other categories are possible, including ignitable, corrosive, peroxide forming chemicals and reactive.

2. Ignitable (40 CFR 261.21) 3. Corrosive (40 CFR 261.22)
Page 3 of 30 D-Listed Ignitable Waste
1. It is a liquid, other than an aqueous solution containing less than 24
percent alcohol by volume and has a flash point less than 60oC (140oF).
2. It is not a liquid and is capable, under standard temperature and
pressure, of causing fire through friction, absorption of moisture or spontaneous chemical changes and, when ignited, burns so vigorously and persistently that is creates a hazard.
D-Listed Corrosive Waste
1. It is aqueous and has a pH less than or equal to 2 or greater than
2. It is a liquid and corrodes steel (SAE 1020) at a rate greater than
6.35mm (0.250 inch) per year at a test temperature of 55oC (130oF).
Page 4 of 30 D-Listed Reactive Waste
1. It is normally unstable and readily undergoes violent change
3. It forms potentially explosive mixtures with water.
4. When mixed with water, it generates toxic gases, vapors, or fumes
in a quantity sufficient to present a danger to human health or the environment.
5. It is a cyanide or sulfide bearing waste which, when exposed tp pH
conditions between 2 and 12.5, can generate toxic gases, vapors, or fumes in a quantity sufficient to present a danger to human health or the environment.
6. It is capable of detonation or explosive reaction if it is subjected to a
strong initiating source or if heated under confinement.
7. It is readily capable of detonation or explosive decomposition or
reaction at standard temperature and pressure.
8. It is a forbidden explosive as defined in 49 CFR 173.51, or a Class
A explosive as defined in 49 CFR 173.53, or a Class B explosive as defined in 49 CFR 173.88.

There are two classes of water-reactive chemicals, those that undergo a
chemical reaction with water, and those that undergo a physical recation, followed by the release of energy (heat/light). Examples of these two categories of waste-reactives are given below:
Chemical Waster-Reactives
lithium metal sodium metal potassium metal alkaline metals (Ca,Mg, Sr) aldyl lithium reagents boron trifluoride solutions grignard reagents metal hydrides (Al, B, Ca, K, Li, Na) anhydrous metal halides
phosphorus oxychloride phosphorus pentoxide sulfuryl chloride thionyl chloride calcium carbide
Physical Water Reactives

Page 28 of 30 Pyrophoric Chemicals
Some chemicals react spontaneously either with air or exposure to
moisture in the air, and may produce either heat, fire, flammable reaction products, or toxic fumes. Some examples of these chemicals are provided below:
