ANNUAL REPORT 2010-2011.
The Capuchin Krishik Seva Kendra has following units: Vimukti at Ujire, Vimukti at Bankal Asha Kiran de-addiction centre at Badravathi Dayalbagh Agriculture Training Institute, Ujire CKSK, Ujire with the support of Child Fund India has made sincere efforts to unearth and nurture the hidden resources of marginalized people through various strategic interventions. It has been able to organize several intervention programmes in various sectors under the age groups between 0-5 years, 6-14 years and 15 to 24 years. Here is a glance on the various activities conducted during the year. I Programs under the age group 0-5 years:
The Project tried sincerely to render sufficient care to the age group of the children between 0-5. The first three years of a Child’s life is very crucial to its later development and personality formation. By keeping this in mind, the Project sensitized the community by organizing following programs. 1. AQIP: Anganawady Quality Improvement Program. The Project surveyed 10
Government pre-schools of the Project area and found out the problems facing in these
centers. According to the requirement and need, the Project supported by supplying
play materials, assistance for construction of toilets, roof repair, cupboard, wall painting
and medical kit. Talents day program is organized in these pre-schools to exhibit their
talents in front of their parents and public.
2. Positive Deviance Hearth program: This program was organized in 5 villages. 169
Members learnt on preparation of nutritious food, contingent diseases, family planning
and to maintain the growth of the children according to their age.
3. Child Care and Practice: Childcare and practices awareness program was arranged at
5 pre-schools with the objective to provide healthy atmosphere for the physical and
mental growth of the infants. Awareness was given to the pregnant mothers to take
care of her mental and physical health during the pregnancy. To know the Importance of
breast-feeding the project organized a program in bangady cluster. The project supplied
madilu kit to 17 deserving babies, and assisted 3 members for breast problems.
Weaning practice, low cost nutritious food preparation, immunization etc., were taught
during the program. Mothers too are informed of the compulsory birth registration and to avail Government facilities. 4. Communicable disease like H1N1 and referrals: Training program was conducted to
the SHG peer educators about the communicable diseases like H1NI, RTI/STI and other
contingent diseases with the object to maintain their health and take precautionary
measures during the illness. 85 members benefited from the program.
5. Training on RCH (Reproductive Child Health): Training program on Reproductive
Health care was arranged to the project staff with the purpose to learn sufficient
information on reproductive health. 35 staff gained knowledge on Reproductive health.
6. Project Pre-schools: The Project runs 4 pre-schools with the goal to ensure that
children are healthy when they reach the schooling age and well nourished,
intellectually curious, socially confident and equipped with a solid foundation for
lifelong learning. The Project also provides a protective, nurturing and stimulating
environment to the children of the age group 0-6 years.
7. Psycho-social activities for cognitive development: The Project arranged the pre-
school day celebration with the object to nurture the talents of the preschool children.
8. Supply of Teaching Learning Materials and play materials to pre-schools: Teaching
learning materials were distributed to the 10 government preschools in order to attract
the children to the preschools and to keep them creative and active. 350 children
benefited from this support.
9. Nutritious Food Preparation Program: The Project with the collaboration of Grama
Panchayat, Women and Child Welfare Project and Shrishakthi Self Help Groups
organized nutritious food preparation program. 100 types of different low cost
nutritious food prepared and exhibited in the program. 300 people were benefited from
the program.
10. Advocacy, care and support of differently abled children: Financial support was
given to 16 differently challenged children to obtain identity card from the Government
in order to avail various facilities.
11. Medicine and vaccination: The project assisted to 246 poor patients who cannot
afford to meet doctor’s expenses.
II Programs under the age group 6-14years: During this age all children should be in the school to access education as it is their one of the fundamental rights. The Project organized several programs to the age group of 6 to 14 years with the object to provide quality education and to nurture their talents and to guide them about their rights. 1. Child friendly Schools: (RIP, SIM) Reading Improvement Program, Skill Improvement
in Mathematics: The Project Selected 5 schools under the child friendly school program
to improve the quality education in government schools. Reading Improvement
Program and Skill Improvement in Mathematics were arranged with the object to
improve the reading skill of the low learners.
2. Preparation for competitive exam: Project organized the training program on
preparation for competitive exams such as Navodaya entrance exam and National Talent entrance exam with the aim to motivate the rural children to avail free education from the government. 220 children got the courage to face the competitive exam. 3. Training on preparation for Board Examination was arranged in Halepete,
Mithabagilu and Ambedkar Bhavan to encourage the children’s progress, to secure good
marks and to continue their higher education. 134 children learnt to prepare and
preplan for the exam.
4. Workshop on Right to Education Act: Right to education act program was arranged
with two batches to the school teachers of Belthangady Taluka. Teachers got the
information on Right to education act, learnt about the right to compulsory and free
education, special attention to drop out and irregular children, evaluation of education
techniques in teaching was done. 240 teachers benefited.
5. Campaign on compulsory enrollment: The Project staffs surveyed the dropout
children and found 20 dropout children in the community. Follow up is done to readmit
them to the school.
6. Bridge course: Special attention was given to the 10th grade children of Halepete and
Mithabagilu School. 65 poor rural children got the opportunity to study more on tough
subjects like science, mathematics and English.
7. Training on creative teaching and effective management: An exposure program was
arranged to the school teachers to study and learn more on physique and planetarium.
8. Formation and strengthening of CWBC (Child Wellbeing Committee): There are 12
CWBCs in the Project area. During the reporting period with the hard efforts of the
committees 6 drop out children continue the schooling. These committees meet once in
two month and discuss about the problems of the children, and find out the ways for solution. They succeeded to vacate the bar shops in rural areas, supported for construction of Way Bridge and plastic houses. Nearly 35 deprived children enjoy better childhood through this center. 9. Campaign against Gender Discrimination: Gender equity awareness program was
organized to give awareness on inequalities and strategies to undo the same. Women
learnt to treat girls and boys equally. The college students of SDM College, Gurudeve,
Mundaje, Malethanbettu, and Koyyur got the awareness through information, street
play and vigilant songs.
10. Dream corner: Project provided opportunities to the children of rural areas to
nurture their talents through child resource center. Children learn computer,
typewriting, music and in door and out door games on Saturday and Sunday.
11. Formation and strengthening of children clubs: 65 children’s clubs are functioning
under the Project with the objective to improve the personality and to gain public civic
sense. Altogether there are 1300 children in the clubs.
12. Interaction with government department: To gain knowledge on the different
government departments and its methodology of functioning study tour was arranged
to the club children. Children learnt on various Government departments and it’s
functioning like Grama Panchayat, health centers, post offices, police station, fire station
etc. Awareness on 108 health services is provided by health department.
13. Child Right Information: Child Right information was given at 5 schools to create
awareness on child rights, and to eliminate child labor and to be vigilant on child rights
in the community. Altogether 300 children and their parents learnt to discuss about
their rights and various problems.
14. Preparation for adolescent stage: Preparation for adolescent stage awareness was
given in 9 schools. Guided adolescent girls to live a dignified life in the society and
nurture good conduct.
15. Conducting Children Grama Sabha: Training Program was organized to the
Panchayat Presidents and the members of Panchayat about the procedures and the
methods of organizing Children’s Gramasabha. A model Children’s Gramasaba was
displayed through Power Point presentation. 60 members benefited from the training
program.
16. HIV/AIDs Awareness Program: Awareness on HIV/AIDS was given in 2 high schools.
600 high school children got the education on HIV/AIDs through information and
street play. 20. Care and support to HIV affected: The Project financially supported the
infected and affected HIV/AIDS for medicines, school materials to 10 members of the
Project area.
17. Biodiversity Conservation Program: The Project organized the awareness
programme on biodiversity conservation with the support of Rastriya Vijnyana Parishath
Bangalore. Children got more information on biodiversity conservation and their role
and responsibility in conserving the same.
III Programs under the age group 15-24 years: Project organized the programs to youth
to motivate them and to improve their skills in various professions.
1. Carrier Guidance training: Carrier guidance training to the youths was organized to
motivate and guide them to select proper courses for their higher studies. 45 students
who have passed SSLC and PUC students gained knowledge to choose the apt courses.
2. Tailoring courses: Tailoring course was organized in 4 centers at Padangady, Kolli,
Kalenja and Bajila to train the young girls on tailoring skills and to raise their income.
3. DTP course (Desk Top Publisher): Project has given the opportunity to 21 youths to
learn DTP and improve their skill on Computer, English, typewriting and screen printing.
4. Training on Life Skill Development: 60 youths and 19 school teachers are trained in
life skill education.
5. Awareness on Anti Farmer Policy: Awareness on anti farmer policy was given to the
community people. 4000 people were sensitized on the importance of agriculture and
conservation of natural resources.
6. Awareness and Campaign against Dowry system and early marriage: Awareness and
campaign against dowry system and early marriage was organized to the federation
members on women’s day. 1500 members got the information on dowry system and
early marriage.
7. Support for availing scholarship: The Project supported the rural poor children to
open bank account and to apply for the various scholarships. 99 children applied for
scholarship with the support of the Project.
8. Participation in Governance /Leadership: 80 SHG members learnt about the Right to
Information Act. SHG members also came to know about the various schemes for the
SHGs from the state and central government. Project too prepared the SHG members to participate in Panchayat Elections by organizing training program, group discussion and sharing of experience from the senior panchayat members. As a result 19 SHG members were elected to the Panchayat. 9. Cultural Troop: The Project formed a cultural troop by training them in various social
issues. This team performed street plays and Yakshagana on different social issues and
thus educated people as how to over come them.
10. Training to eligible couples: The Project organized training program to the eligible
couples with the aim to educate the youths for better and happy married life. 115 Young
girls were mentally prepared to face their marriage life and to live a dignified life.
11. Training and exposure on wormy composting: The Project organized training
program on wormy composting and organic manure with the support of Rastriya
Vijnyana Parishath Bangalore and Horticulture Department. 150 Members participated.
12. Training on Jasmine Cultivation: Training program was organized with the
collaboration of Pilikula Nisarga Dama on jasmine cultivation. 60 members came
forward to cultivate jasmine and to raise their income.
1. Self Help Groups: Self Help Groups are the platform that provides basic structure for
all the developmental activities. Now under the patronage of Vimukti SHG Federation
there are 200 women SHGs and 20 men SHGs in 38 villages. The total number of
members has crossed above 3500.
2. Formation of SHG /intervention in new area: During the reporting period Project
formed the SHGs in new areas viz Murje, Elanthila, Maddyadka, Pilichandikallu.
3. Representative Meetings were held once a month to plan for the strengthening of
their SHGs at cluster level.
4. Cluster meetings: Once in four months cluster meetings are conducted to discus
about their progress and problems at cluster level. Under the Vimukti SHG Federation
there are 28 clusters in Belthangady and Bantwal Taluk.
5. Federation Representative meeting was arranged once in four months to evaluate
the cluster meetings and to discuss about the programs.
6. Sustainability of the Federation: Members purchase rice, tea powder and oil through
the federation for the sustainability of the federation. 50% of the income will be
credited to the SHGs and 50% remain in federation for the administrative purpose.
7. Vimukti Self Employment Unit: Vimukti store is established in Belthangady to provide
marketing opportunity to the SHG members to sell their products like vermy compost,
sweets, household items, areca plate, honey, phenol, tea power etc. Through this unit
quality stitched uniforms are also provided to the different schools.
8. Health Insurance: Health insurance awareness was given in 28 clusters of Project area
to motivate the people to take up precautionary measures of their health.
9. Financial Transaction of the Federation: Self Help Groups are Micro Finance
Institutions. The financial development and the total transaction are surprising the
women when it is collectively presented.

Other achievement/recognition:
 With the support of staff and SHG members Tulu dramas were organized to raise funds for the construction of Vimukti training center.  Deepawali and Christmas programs were organized in Belthangady and Ujire.  New office building was inaugurated and blessed by his Lordship Rt. Rev. Dr. Lawrance Mukkuzhy, the Bishop of Diocese of Belthangady on 8th March 2011 at 10 am. It was a long dreamt dream of thousands of people and now that dream is being realized. On this auspicious day Rev. Fr.Vincent Furtado, the Provincial Minister, Holy Trinity Province, Karnataka and the president of CKSK was present. Fr. Chetan Lobo to mark the event released a magazine, “a voice of the voiceless”, a magazine dedicated to the deprived, vulnerable and excluded children of the society.
Vimukti Banakal
Vimukti Banakal is working among the rural poor, in Mudigere taluk through the support
of the Andere Hilfe project. It is mainly concentrating on empowerment of Women,
Welfare of Farmers, Children’s Clubs, men SHGs and holistic development of the rural
people.
1. Meetings of Vimukti SHG Federation: Once in two months meeting of Vimukti SHG
Federation is held. Many of the issues regarding the Federation, the women, children
are discussed. SHG Federation meetings are held regularly.
2. Cluster Meetings: During the cluster meeting certain information regarding the
facilities that are available in the Gram Panchayath, Taluk Panchayath, Agricultural
Department, Health Department, Social Welfare Department, and Horticultural
Department was given.
3. Information on Family Health Insurance: On 6th April, 2010 information was given to
the SHG members regarding Family Health Insurance. Mr. Arvin D’Souza LIC Agent was
the resource person. It was held in Grama Panchayath Hall, Banakal.
4. Career Guidance: On 25th April, 2010 training was given to S.S.L.C., P.U.C., and
Graduate students with regard to education and job opportunities. Mr. Rajesh
Bejjangala, Indus college, Puttur was the resource person. It was held in J.C. Hall,
Mudigere. There were 50 participants. On 26th April, 2010 it was held in Banakal Grama
Panchayath hall. There were 93 partiipants.
5. Information on Fisheries: On 4th May 2011 information regarding the fisheries was
given to the SHG members in Grama Panchayath hall, Banakal. There were 103 SHG
members participated. Dr. A.V.Swamy from Fishery Department, Mudigere was the
resource person.
6. HIV/AIDS Awareness Rally and Health Awareness programme: On 28th May 2011
HIV/AIDS rally was held in Mudigere. More than 2000 SHG members participated in the
rally. After the rally there was a stage programme in Adyanthataya Ranga Mandira,
Mudigere.
7. Distribution of books under Janashree Insurance Scheme: School note books were
distributed to the children of the beneficiaries of Janashree Insurance. There were 495
children that benefited from this scheme. Vimukti Banakal took the initiative to
distribute the note books to the poor children of the children’s clubs. All the children of
the children’s clubs benefited from this programme.
8. Inaugration of Farmers’s Club: On 21st June new farmer’s club named as
Makarajyothi was inaugurated in the presence of Divakara Hegde from Nabard, Andrew
D’Souza from DCC bank. There were 60 people participated in this programme.
9. Training to the Staff of Vimukti Banakal: From 6th July to 9th July the staff of Vimukti
Banakal participated in the “Capacity Building Training and the Rights of the Children”
which was organized by Vimulti Potnal.
10. Fishery Day celebration in R.R.S. Mudigere: On 10th July – the staff of the Vimukti
Banakal participated in the Fishery Day celebration in R.R.S. in Mudigere. They visited
few fishery ponds and collected necessary information.

11. Voluntary Service: Through the initiative of Vimukti Banakal and the SHG’s
Shramadanas were organized in various places such as preparing the school flower
garden, repairing the damaged roads, cleaning the temple premises, cleaning the school
premises and so on.
 On 12th July, 30 SHG members of Matthikatte came together in order to do the shramadana and cultivate a flower garden in the local school.  On 26th July, the members of Chandana farmers club came forward to do Shramadan by repairing the damaged road. 23 members were present.  On 9th August, through the initiative of Jai Bheem SHG, Shramadan was organized in the Sabli School premises. 29 members were present.  On 6th September, Shramadana was organized by the SHG members of Balur area in the temple premises. 35 members were present.  On 26th September 2010 the SHGs of Guthihali rendered their voluntary service in cleaning the Guthihalli School premises.  On 15th November, the SHGs of B.Hosalli Cluster rendered their voluntary service in cleaning the surroundings of Jakkali School. The voluntary service of the SHG members was useful to keep the surroundings clean.
12. Independence Day Celebration: Independence Day was celebrated in various places
through the initiative of different SHGs, Children’s Clubs. Many children participated in
the cultural programme and entertained the people and clearly brought out the
patriotic spirit.
13. Blood Donation Camp: Together with JCC Banakal, blood camp was organized in
which 32 people donated blood and 20 peopled had their blood test.
14. Training on preparation of cattle and poultry feed: On 14th September , training
was organized for the SHG members on preparation of cattle and poultry feed. 40
members were present for this training. Dr. Rudraswami from Krishi Vijnana Kendra,
Mudigere was the resource person.

15. Information on Nutritious Food: On 20th September, programme was organized in
order to give information on Nutritious Food. Mrs. Shakunthala from Health department
was the resource person. This was held in Phalguni Samudaya Bhavan. 32 SHG women
were present for this programme.
16. Information on Social Welfare Department: On 25th September, programme was
organized on the information on Social Welfare Department. This programme was
organized in Lokavalli Samudaya Bhavan. Mrs. Harshakumari from Social Welfare
Department was the resource person. She informed about the revolving fund that is
available to SC/ST SHGs, how to write application, student scholarship, information
about training on Tailoring, Nursing course, regarding admission to the Morarji Schools
etc.
17. Training on Organic Agriculture: From 27th to 29th September, training was held in
Guthihalli for three days regarding Organic Agriculture. The members of Prathvi Farmers
Club were the participants. 35 members participated in this training which was
organized in Guthihalli. The purpose of this training was to encourage Organic Farming.
The training involved practical excercises.
18. Celebration of Gandhi Jayanthi: On 2nd October, Gandhi Jayanthi was celebrated in
Muthigepura Samudaya Bhavan by Apoorva, Ananya, Akanksha, men and women SHGs.
Mr. Rajesh, president of Halemudigere Grama Panchayath was the chief Guest. The SHG
members were made aware about the Gandhian principles. This programme was
organized by the SHG members themselves.
19. Information on Excise Department: On 5th October, programme was organized in
order to give information to the SHG women about the Excise Department. Mr.
Narayana Gauda from Excise Department was the resource person. He gave the
necessary information regarding the consequences and punishment to the people who
are involved in illegal brewing and selling of arrack.
20. World Food Day: On 19th October, World Food Day was celebrated in Banakal
Panchayath Hall through the co-operation of Krishi Vijnana Kendra, Mudigere and Krishi
Vishwa Vidyanilaya, Bangalore. 140 members participated in this programme. Dr.
T.T.Prasanna Kumar, Mr. Umashankar, Dr. Rudraswami were the resource persons.
21. Felicitaion Programme to the Retired Head Master: On 22nd October, Felicitaion
programme to the retired Head Mistress was organized in Lower primary School,
Lokavalli. The members of Siri, Sindhu, Sadhana, Sarika, Sagara SHGs organized this
programme.
22. Annual Day Celebration of Chandrodaya SHG: On 29th October, the members of
Chandrodaya SHG celebrated the annual day of their SHG. Mrs. Saroja, the president of
the federation was the Chief Guest for this function. It was held in Balehalli Samudaya
Bhavan. During this function Mrs. Saroja, the newly elected member of Grama
Panchayath and the member of Chandrodaya was felicitated.
23. Annual Day Celebration of Saptami Children’s Club: On 31st October, the members
of Saptami Children’s Club in the Vimukti office. The children gave a beautiful cultural
programme along with the Annual report.
24. Programme on Animal Husbandry: From 25th to 27th October, a programme was
held regarding the income generation activities through animal husbandry. 40 women
were present for this programme. They learnt about the opportunities that are available
with regard to animal husbandry and the proper way to organize it.
25. Training on Book Keeping: On 23rd October, programme was organized in
Bapunagara Kalika Kendra for the Mudigere SHG cluster with regard to book keeping.
26. Information on Police Department: On 31st October, programe was organized to the
member of Tripura cluster in order to give proper information about the police
department. Mr. Pradeep Kumar and Mr. Bhanu Kumar, Civil Police Constables were the
resource persons.
27. Programme on Long Term Mixed Crops and control of Diseases and Pests: From
24th to 26th November a programme was organized with regard to Long Term mixed
crops and control of diseases and pests. It was held in Mularahalli. 55 people
participated in this programme.
28. Annual Day Celebration of Jai Bheem Men SHG: On 30th November the members of
Jai Bheem men SHG celebrated the annual day of their SHG in Sabli Samudaya Bhavan.
The members of the Jai Bheem men SHG organized different games for men and women
of the village.

29. MEDP Programme on Short Term Agriculture: From 10th to 12th January, a training
programme was held in Phalguni Samudaya Bhavan on Short Term Agriculture. During
this training information was given with regard to the cultivation of plantain trees, inter
crops, ginger crops, paddy crops, different diseases, prevention and control.
30. TB awareness meetings: TB awareness meetings were organized from October 2010
in different places for the SHG members. Three meetings per month were held in three
places.
31. Street Plays: The children of Children’s Cultural Troupe acted out a street play on TB
named as “Kshaya Rogada Nruthya” (The dance of TB) in four places namely
Subhashnagar, Phalguni, Banakal High School and Indiranagar.

32. National Farmers Day celebration: On 23rd December 2010, National Farmers day
was celebrated in Krishi Vijnana Kendra, Mudigere. 48 members participated in this
programme.
33. New Year celebration and the distribution of fruits saplings: On 9th January 2011,
the women of Bapunagara cluster distributed fruits saplings and celebrated the New
Year.
34. V.D.C. Training to the staff members: On 19th January, Fr. Blaize gave training to the
staff members on the formation of V.D.C.
35. Medical Check-up for the Cattle: On 24th January, there was medical check-up for
the cattle which was held in Hadthal and Kallaki. The villagers benefited a lot.
36. World Women’s Day Celebration: On 8th March 2011, World Women’s Day was
celebrated in Grama Panchayath Hall, Banakal. During the programme the importance
of Women empowerment was highlighted.
37. Inauguration of Men SHG Cluster: On 22nd March 2011, two Men SHG cluster were
inaugurated. This has given the opportunity to men to think about issues concerning the
development of the society. This programme was held in Banakal Samudaya Bhavan.
Asha Kiran, Bhadravati Activities
1. Patients of Substance Abuse: 309 addicts both male and female were admitted for
IRCA during this year. The modalities of the treatment were updated as per the
direction of MSJE & RRTC. Majority of the addicts hail from Karnataka even though there
were addicts from the neighboring states as well. The treatment period lasts for four
weeks.
2. Motivating Information & Group Therapy: All the information on de-addiction given
during the sessions every day for 3 weeks. Important topics of proper motivation, life of
sobriety, relapse mechanism, strengthening of the spiritual life are dealt with. During
the Group Therapy, they share the vulnerability of their life and activity and personalize
convictions.
3. Counseling: There are 8 counseling sessions organized systematically for each
individual. There were 2472 such counseling sessions. Thus, patients themselves are
directed to confront their ignorance, foolishness, malice and helplessness in various
areas of life and resolve to overcome them through forgiveness, right convictions and
resolution. Family counseling is also well organized in 4 sessions, for each addict’s
family, in which the supportive persons, especially the family members who are empowered to walk with addict in his life of sobriety. We had 1688 such sessions for family people. 4. Recourse to Higher Power: The addicts have morning and evening prayers, Dyana
through Vipasana meditation, singing of devotional songs, keerthans and bhajans too.
Yoga is also practiced. Hence, through spiritual potential and faith in the Higher Power is
also promoted.
5. Relaxation & Recreation: There are outdoor games works in the flower garden,
keeping the living quarters, and surroundings clean, access to listen to Music, facility of
T.V., audio visuals, daily news papers. Group dynamics give sufficient scope for
relaxation.
6. AA Meetings: AA meetings are regularly organized on every Sunday evening for the
recovered and sober ex-addicts. The exchange of their information on miserable life of
addiction and now the good life of sobriety gives everyone a new vision and offers a
challenge for new life.
7. Follow-up Programmes: Follow-up programmes takes place in three phases- personal
visits by counselors, telephones, and addicts coming to the centre for follow-up. As per
the availability and need the counselors visited 40 ex-addict’s family and necessary
guidance, direction and counseling is given. 112 adicts who are far away from
Bhadravathi, they are contacted over the phone and the needful is done to them. 792
came to the centre and got support for the follow-up.

During the awareness programmes the participants were sensitized to opt for sobriety. During the camps sensitizing, medication treatment was provided and they opted for sobriety. 8. Research Paper: From 16th-19th of Jan 2011, ANCIPS, 63rd Annual national Conference
of Indian Psychological Society, took place in New Delhi. On that a research paper was
presented by our medical officer Dr. Harish Delanthabettu and Fr. Charles Saldanha on
the efficacy of Disulfiram in the treatment of Alcohol Dependence.
9. Celebrations: Both Independence Day and Republic Day were celebrated by all the
inmates of Asha Kiran. In the morning special prayers were offered after which national
flag was hoisted and some members spoke-out their patriotic feelings.
10. World AIDS Day: On 1st of Dec 2010, world AIDS day was celebrated. As chief guest,
the taluk judge Basavaraj and the Health Officer Dr. Mallappa, Dr. Harish and the
Secretary of the Bar association spoke. The inmates of Asha Kiran, staff and 24 addicts
were present.
11. Annual Day: 14th November, the annual day was specially marked this year as this
was the beginning of the decennial year. Rt. Rev. Dr. Jerald Isaac Lobo, Bishop of
Shimoga Diocese was the president. Honorable Tahasildar of Bhadravati, Mr. Victor
Fernandes, Rev. Fr. Arun capuchin and Mr. James N.J were the chief guests. There were
around 300 participants to celebrate the day.
12. Future Plans: To have modest Decennial celebrations and equip the staff by sending
them for training and refresher courses. Decennial Souvenir is getting ready.
13. Support from the Department/MSJE: All the officials of women and child welfare at
Shimoga and Bangalore and of MSJE at New Delhi extend to us generous co-operation
and support. We thank all of them.
2. DAYALBAGH AGRICULTURAL TRAINING INSTITUTE(R) {DATI}.
DATI was a unit of The Capuchin Krishik Seva Kendra registered under Karnataka Societies Registration Act 1960. It was started in the year 1980. It is affiliated to the Department of Training and Employment in the State of Karnataka, under National Apprenticeship Training Scheme, Government of India. DATI is premier institute in training in agriculture and horticulture exclusively for the rural poor youth with small land hording in order to improve their own land so that they may get enough income to earn their livelihood. Due to illiteracy and ignorance, large numbers of Indian farmers depend on traditional method of cultivation. The illiteracy and traditional beliefs and attitude towards production are an obstacle in the adoption of new farming techniques. Even today, a large number of farmers in our country use wooden ploughs and bullocks. In addition, there is widespread ignorance about the use of modern inputs and techniques such as multiple cropping. Since 80% of the total population in India is working in agricultural sector, D.A.T.I has a wider scope and an important role to play in the life of youth who are interested in agricultural sector. Training the young and enterprising underprivileged village students is the principal aim of DATI. We recruit and train both young boys and girls without cast, creed, and gender discrimination. These students we recruit from rural villages. We provide them free educational training, board and lodge. This year thirteen students are benefiting from this course. Following programs, we cover every year under this course. TRAINING IN HORTICULTURE:
D.A.T.I as an Institution which covers wide programs every year for the trainees, consisting of both theory and practical in gardening, horticulture, agriculture, nursery, vermin in culture, rubber plantation, management of garden, management of nursery etc. The students are found to be cooperative. The students spend two hours in the classroom for theory and two hours in the garden for practical. Every weekend they present a report of their practical knowledge to the tutor. We had following programs conducted this year. 2. Practical classes in rubber nursery, vegetable garden, horticulture, coconut and 3. N.I.O.S. classes in history and economics 4. Training program in organic farming by Mr. Dabbanna from agricultural 5. Students attended the program on Krishi Mela at Bajagoli on 6-2-2011. 6. Students paid field visits to Miranda farms, - Naravi, Soans farms at Moodbidri, and regional research station at Brahmavar. 7. Awareness programe on the use of plastic – street play at Mundaje College, belthangady, Gurudev college, Belthangady, Santhekatte college at Belthangady and first grade College Melantha Bettu. COCONUT FARM:
At present, we have 695 yielding trees and 230 non-yielding. Due to good rains and hard labor of our students, the coconut yield is better, but the monkeys destroy the yield. The price was reasonably good towards the end of the financial year. This year we received Rs. 1, 50 980/- from the sale of coconuts. ARECA NUTS:
We have approximately 6,000 trees and 1,600 non-yielding. Areca trees are taken good care this year watering them regularly. Entire garden has an irrigation facility now. We received Rs. 8,57,286 from sale of areca nuts. PADDY CULTIVATION:
This year, we cultivated two paddy crops. Compared to the previous years, the yield was good but the heavy rains caused problems during harvesting. Some of the fields are used for growing grass for the cows because hey price has increased much. This year we got 30-quintal rice. VEGETABLES:
We found that this soil is good for cultivating vegetables. We cultivated cucumbers, brinjals, beans, spinnage, pumpkins, lady fingers, amaranths, curry cucumbers, tapioca etc. The excess vegetables we sold for normal price. RUBBER PLANTATION:
It is proved that at present the rubber is the best income generating source and more profitable than any other crops and cash crops. We have about 3,500 rubber plants in all, among which 1,100 are yielding and another 600 will be ready soon, and the rest will be ready after 4 years. The price went up to Rs. 240 per kilo. We also faced tappers problem this year. The family left with short notice and the next tapper was not a steady man. He too left soon. Altogether, we have been able to market a sum of Rs.7,51,494/- worth rubber during the financial year 2010-2011. We have another 500 rubber saplings for plantation this year. CASH CROPS:
Our farm also includes the cash crops like cashew, pepper, mango, jackfruits and banana. Cashew yield was rather satisfactory but good many trees died due to sickness. We sold 120 kilo cashew nuts at the rare of Rs. 68/-. The pepper plants are dying due to sickness. We collected 55 kilo pepper and sold 38 kilo at the rate of Rs. 200/-. Mango yield was better but untimely rains destroyed the yield. We have planted more than hundred banana trees this year. Present we have 39 cows and out of which 20 are milking and rest are calves. All the cows are healthy. After keeping for our requirements, we get an average 80 liters of milk for sale each day. The milk is given to the Society. The society gives us the rate depending upon the pat contains in a liter. The cost of the cattle feed rise every day. Dairy is not a loss, since we get gobar gas for our use and manure for our garden. PIGGERY:
We had 18 pigs in the current year and 16 piglets. Out of which 3 pigs were slaughtered and we sold 15 piglets at the rate of 1800/- per piglet. At present, we have 16 bigger ones and 9 younger ones altogether numbering 25. We earned Rs. 41,000 from piggery. GOAT REARING:
Goat rearing is one of the activities of this institution to raise income of the house. It is one of the easiest occupations with low investment. Right now, we have twenty-five goats. COMPUTER TRAINING:
In this competing world of technology and computers, our students are found to cope up with the situation to compete with the world to as to earn their livelihood. The course of DTP has brought smile on their desperate faces. LABOURERS:
We have 13 regular laborers among whom 6 are residents in our campus. A canteen is put up to cater for the students. One worker is fully engaged for this purpose. Improvements:
In the part of improvement side one can observe that our entire farm looks better. It is mainly because of the better irrigation system and the manuring. In order to get a better result all round improvement has been sought. The efforts have been made to utilize more river water so that the water in our wells and in the lake is spared for the time of greater necessity. In the recent years, the new pipelines have been installed, and the provision has been made for 150 sprinklers. Conclusion:
In conclusion, as we went through the report of 2010-2011 there has been a lot and marvelous works has been undertaken by the CKSK. For all this, nothing but we say a big thank you. We are grateful to all our staff members, President and members of CKSK society. Society gratefully acknowledges the support of MSJE through grant and guidance for the work at Asha Kiran. Society is grateful to all benefactors, well-wishers, sponsors, who generously support the work of Asha Kiran Integrated Rehabilitation Centre for Addicts. Project with the support of Child Fund India, TDSS, Government departments, Local NGOs, youth clubs and the community people has achieved a lot in reaching out the most vulnerable sections of the society. Today the Organization is sincerely indebted to the support given by these above agencies. As a result, today hope and confidence is ignited in these people’s life and certainly, one day they will reach that goal which they aim now.
