Constantly in demand, Danny, since 1975, has averaged more than 200 travel days per year, including 22 trips to Japan and more than 150 to Europe. During a particularly active period, 2004-2006, Danny traveled to Europe 37 times in 36 months, averaging more than 1 trip per month for 3 years. He has performed at every major European Jazz festival, including multiple appearances at the Montreux Festival (live recordings with the Blues Brothers Band and John Mclaughlin’s Mahavishnu Orchestra), The North Sea Festival (Den Haag), Estival Jazz (Lugano, Switzerland), and Umbria Jazz (live recording and DVD with Sting and the Gil Evans Orchestra). Danny has been teaching at the University level since 2000, when he was featured as a visiting guest artist and educator at Rollins College, Orlando, Florida (2000-2005). In 2003, Danny then became a visiting guest artist and graduate level instructor at the University of South Florida, in Tampa (2003-2005).
In 2005, Danny was granted a Master’s Level Equivalency rating by SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools), and began a Tenure Track Assistant Professor position at the University of North Florida. During Danny’s first four years at UNF, he created a successful applied drum set teaching studio, created and directed successful jazz combos, and by using an adaption of a text originally created by USF jazz director Jack Wilkins. created the first on-line course in UNF music department’s history (Evolution of Jazz, Distance Leaning). He was granted tenure and promotion to Associate Professor in 2008. From 2008 until the present, Danny, as an Associate Professor of Jazz Studies, has continued his highly rated University accomplishments. With help from the UNF CIRT lab, he wrote an original course text and created a completely new version of the Evolution of Jazz Distance Learning class. He also wrote and created a second course text, a more advanced, highly successful “Evolution of Jazz 2” Distance Learning course. Both courses continue to earn high level student evaluations. In six years, with having had more than 1000 students enrolled in both courses, there has not been one letter of criticism, and in general, most students have commented “that they would have never been exposed to this music without having taken this courses=”. Danny’s applied students have also experienced success. Most students have developed successful performance careers with other shave been accepted into Graduate schools, many with full scholarships and graduate assistantships. Examples include: Nathaniel Stokes (full scholarship-graduate school, University of Miami); John Lumpkin, Ben Adkins, Steve Picataggio (full scholarships, graduate assistantships Florida State University); Steve Picattagio (New York University); A 2013 graduate, Phillip Gillette, just received a teaching assistantship at William Patterson College. The book is used as a courseware textbook by Danny’s UNF students, continues to be a worldwide success. It was rated the number one percussion book in sales on Amazon as recently as April, 2013. Another interesting aspect of Danny’s performance career, is his membership in actor / bassist Gary Sinise’s Lt. Dan Band. Danny met Gary while performing in the Epcot Candlelight processional Orchestra (Gary was a guest narrator), and in December , 2004, Gary asked Danny and his wife, percussionist Beth Gottlieb, to play a benefit concert for wounded soldiers with his newly formed Lt Dan Band. It was a special event, and shortly afterward, Danny and Beth were asked by Gary to join the group. Since 2005, they have played more than 250 concerts, mainly benefits for the US Military and the USO. Since Danny’s appointment to Associate Professor in 2008, the band has averaged 40 concerts a
year, and have included tours to Afghanistan, Guantanamo Bay, Kuwait, Ft. Hood, Walter Reed Hospital, Brook Army medical Center, San Diego Medical Hospital, and many more. Danny states “ I have to say that performing with Gary Sinise and Lt. Dan Band is one of the greatest experiences of my life. I know it may seem odd for a predominantly jazz performer to enjoy playing with a cover band, but it’s so great, on so many levels. We play mostly benefits, and playing music to raise money for those in need has changed my life. Gary has partnered with the Siller Foundation and many concerts are done to help build homes for severely wounded soldiers. Gary promotes the concerts to each community, and to see the outpouring of supports in ach community is unbelievable. It feels like he is changing the world, banding people together, city by city, and it’s wonderful to just be involved. It feels like you are really doing something”. He continues ”The band is a joy with which to perform! It is a group of amazing musicians, playing classic tunes with incredible energy and intensity. And Gary sounds fantastic on bass! He’s a great rhythm section partner, and for someone who does not usually play this wide array of popular songs, it is actually a big challenge. And to perform them with my wife Beth on percussion is like a dream come true”. There are many concerts booked for the LTDB for 2013, including 12 “Building homes for America’s Bravest” fund raising events; a return concert at San Diego Medical Center; Ravinia Park near Chicago; a tour to Japan and Okinawa for the USO; Air Adventure in OshKosh, Wisconsin and the American Disabled Vets Convention in Orlando. The band will also perform at ground Zero, in New York City, on September 30th for the Siller Foundation, as part of their “Tunnel to Towers” event. Please check the tour dates itinerary on this site for current information.
